About the Guru

Smt. Lakshmi Kumaraguruparan is a disciple of 'Lalitha Kala Suma' Dr. Smt. Manjula Sriram, a professor retired from the Teacher's College of Music, Music Academy, Chennai. She had her initial vocal and veena training from Smt. Padmavathy Ananthagopalan, a renowned Vainika and sister of the illustrious Lalgudi Sri. Jayaraman. Lakshmi has also had the opportunity to hone her skills from noted Mridangam Vidwan Kalaimamani Srimushnam V. Rajarao and Smt. Padma Chandilyan.

Lakshmi was brought up in a family that treated music as God. She was exposed to Carnatic Music when she was three, by her grandmother who is a direct descendent of the Trinity of Carnatic Music, Sri. Muthuswami Dikshitar. She has been fortunate to learn music in a traditional 'Gurukulam' style of learning during her school and university days.

Before moving to Australia, Lakshmi received her B High grade from All India Radio Chennai. She also holds a Masters of Music degree from University of Madras.

Lakshmi has a vast repertoire of more than 1000 songs including many rare varnas and krithis of various composers. She has been a regular performer at the December Margazhi festival in Chennai. She has also performed several thematic concerts and lecture demonstrations in Chennai and in many cities in Australia. She is passionate about teaching music and has been training students in Australia and USA since 2011.

Over the years, Lakshmi has developed voice culture techniques and exercises that enable students of music to 'find' their voice and use it properly.
